Serial scammer targeting small businesses in five states
Police in several states report an alleged scammer has taken payments for business signs and failed to deliver. To date, small businesses in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee have been affected.
The International Sign Association and its Affiliated Associations offer resources to help small businesses locate credible sign companies in their area.
The Midwest Sign Association covers the affected states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, as well as western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The Mid South Sign Association covers the affected state of Tennessee as well as Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The Illinois Sign Association works in that affected state.
All three associations maintain member directories on their websites.
Businesses in other states may find their Affiliated Association here.
Other tips from ISA’s website:
- Shopping for a sign company is just like shopping for any other company. Look for signs you like and ask the business owners to tell you who built them. Ask for recommendations at business groups, such as the local chamber of commerce.
- Comparison shop and look at examples of signs the company has built. If possible, visit the signs in person.
- Ask specifics about what the service entails, including follow-up and securing a sign permit.
