A simple calculation to determine ideal sign sizes for roadside on-premise signage scenarios
New resources from the Sign Research Foundation (SRF) break down the science behind sign visibility and offers a calculation tool that can be used to test design concepts.
Authors Keith Davis, of KRD Design, and Mark Jenkinson, an independent creative consultant, have compiled On-Premise Signage: Situations, Legibility & Visibility Guidelines for Traffic Safety, and accompanying resources.
Use these resources when talking to customers and sign code officials about the importance of letter size, contrast, placement, sign height, and other critical characteristics.
The full report is divided into three sections geared toward three unique audiences – planners, designers, and sign owners. It breaks down:
- How sign size impacts visibility and readability so planners can understand driver situations and factor in viewer reaction times.
- Principles for sign placement for optimal legibility so sign owners can learn more about the cone of vision and sign blocking.
- Design considerations for sign conspicuity to better understand sign legibility factors like color contrasts, type legibility and sign area calculation.
All resources are packaged together to include:
- Full Report ($29.99)
- Quick Reference Field Guide ($19.99)
- Master Calculation Worksheet
- Video Guide by the Authors on Using the Report
- Blank Worksheets for Variance Hearings
All resources ($59.99) are available at signresearch.org/visibility.
