Olympia Considers Electronic Message Centers

Olympia Considers Electronic Message Centers

On Aug. 1, Olympia’s Planning Commission held a public hearing on a proposed ordinance for expanding the use of electronic message centers. Currently EMCs are only allowed for schools and auto service zones in the Washington city. ISA’s James Carpentier testified before the Planning Commission, where he informed local officials that the city’s proposed three-minute hold time for messages is too restrictive. ISA staff was joined at the public hearing by sign users and sign companies, including Daktronics. The proposed ordinance also includes language based on ISA’s recommendations for EMC nighttime brightness. The Planning Commission is accepting written input from the public until Monday, Aug. 8. For more information, please contact ISA’s James Carpentier at [email protected].
