Thousands of Planners Gather to Learn About Sign Codes

Six months ago, a planner from York County, Virginia was attempting to revise regulations that pertain to electronic signs. It’s a daunting task and a familiar one to many planners and sign code experts.

That planner reached out to the International Sign Association for advice – and was able to reconnect with ISA at the recent American Planning Association’s national conference in Seattle.

ISA’s Kenny Peskin (@signcodeguy) joined Arizona Sign Association Executive Director Patti King in speaking with more than 6,000 planners, educators, citizens, business leaders and elected officials at the event. ISA staff answered questions about sign codes and EMCs, distributed its library of publications for local government officials, and previewed the newly-released Best Practices in Regulating Temporary Signs guide. ISA staff also met with key leaders of the planning community and attended several seminars highlighting views on the regulation of signs.

The International Sign Association also had a booth at the conference, which is where the planner from York County found Peskin one afternoon. He was looking for additional information that could be rolled into his sign code proposal. Peskin was happy to provide him with some one-on-one attention and examples of approaches from other localities. In fact, ISA and the Virginia Sign Association had helped his counterpart in neighboring Newport News, VA with the same issue in June 2014.
