Also on Tuesday, ISA and key members of the sign industry helped persuade the Salt Lake City council members to reconsider voting on sign code proposals that would have prohibited EMCs with any motion and animation capabilities. ISA’s James Carpentier submitted a statement in opposition to these prohibitions, accompanied by the latest research by Texas A&M University on EMCs and traffic safety, and a study by the University of Cincinnati on the Economic Value of Signs. ISA did support several sections of the draft language, including a prohibition on flashing signs and a proposed brightness standard, but the language prohibiting any motion made the entire proposal unpalatable.
ISA will continue to work with Salt Lake City officials, the Utah Sign Association, local sign companies and sign users in the area to help make sure that the city enacts a reasonable and beneficial sign code. For more information, please contact James Carpentier.
