Regulators Learn How and Why Digital Signage Can Work

Dozens of regulators now have new insights into the world of digital signage.

At the invitation of the Jamestown (NY) Planning Commission, ISA’s Kenny Peskin (@signcodeguy) recently educated more than 30 commissioners, staff, and community business leaders from several Chautauqua County, N.Y. communities.

Currently, Jamestown does not allow for the by-right operation of electronic message centers, but several major community stakeholders and nonprofit institutions would like to incorporate digital displays and other nontraditional signage forms as part of several major construction and renovation projects in the downtown business district.  Additionally, business leaders hope to allow for regulatory equity with the several businesses with existing time-and-temperature displays. Peskin’s presentation focused on workable methods of establishing overlay districts and corridor regulations, as well as discussions of EMC-specific enforcement subjects.  According to the December 22, 2014 Jamestown Post-Journal, Commission Chairwoman Martha Zenns described ISA as: “coming from the industry’s position that the signs can coexist appropriately and safely for everyone’s mutual benefit. The ISA’s position is the signs help communities as far as sales tax if the signs increase local business sales.”

Also participating in the discussions with Jamestown officials were ISA members Hanson Sign Companies (Falconer, N.Y.), Watchfire Signs (@watchfiresigns), and several representatives of the Northeast States and New York State Sign Associations.
