OSHA Training Deadline Nears for Sign Companies

By December 1, 2013, many sign companies will have to be compliant with a new rule issued by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). Sign companies whose employees produce or handle hazardous chemicals must train these employees on new labeling elements and a standardized format for Safety Data Sheets (SDS). The new label elements and SDS requirements are aimed to improve employee understanding of the hazards associated with the chemicals in their workplace.

The December 1, 2013 deadline phases in the first requirement of the rule, whose implementation will be finalized by June 2016. Businesses that use certain chemicals must continue to update safety data sheets when new ones become available, provide training on the new label elements and update hazard communication programs if new hazards are identified. Businesses that produce these chemicals must review hazard information for all chemicals produced or imported, classify chemicals according to the new classification criteria, and update labels and safety data sheets.
