OSHA Meeting Addresses Sign Industry Concerns

OSHA Meeting Addresses Sign Industry Concerns

OSHA Administrator Dr. David Michaels and other OSHA representatives recently met with ISA staff to discuss key issues of concern to small businesses and the sign industry. Employee health, the proper disposal of hazardous materials and the crane safety rule were addressed at the meeting. Dr. Michaels and his staff confirmed that OSHA is still considering extending key parts of the crane safety rule until November 2017, including the operator certification and qualification provisions that impact so many sign companies (which were supposed to take effect November 2014).

Many sections in OSHA’s crane safety rule apply to the sign industry, including signalperson, rigger and crane inspector qualifications, crane inspection requirements (shift, monthly, and annual), power line contact rules and additional safety device requirements. It is important that employers understand these parts of the rule and know what they need to do to be in compliance. For more information, contact ISA’s David Hickey or review this helpful resource.
