Obamacare Delay Does Not Include Small Business
Recently the Obama administration delayed implementation of the Affordable Care Act for those businesses with more than 50 full-time equivalent employees (FTE) until January 1, 2015, but businesses with fewer than 50 FTE – which includes most sign companies – will still be affected by the law in the very near future. Currently, there is a Small Business Health Care Tax Credit available for businesses with fewer than 50 low-and-moderate income workers, and who already provide coverage to those employees. In addition, starting in January 2014, small employers with up to 50 FTE will have access to the new health care insurance marketplace through the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP), which is designed to help increase their high-quality coverage purchasing power.
Effective October 1, 2013, all employers must provide written notification to their employees (full and part time) of their options under the new health insurance marketplaces to choose and obtain private health insurance and possible eligibility for subsidized coverage that will open in January 2014.
