Lights On in Arizona
For more than two years, the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), which serves as the regional planning agency for metropolitan Phoenix, has been debating a model Pattern Outdoor Lighting Code. This model outdoor lighting code contained language that would have adversely affected illuminated signs, which is why the Arizona Sign Association and ISA worked with key stakeholders to defeat MAG’s “Dark Sky” initiatives. The Coalition for Safe and Responsible Lighting consisted of many sign users and business organizations that strongly opposed MAG’s efforts. ISA’s James Carpentier helped lead the coalition in its efforts. On Wednesday, it became apparent that a compromise could not be reached on this issue, and MAG took no action on the Pattern Outdoor Lighting Code.
