ISA Influencing the NEC
Building on highly successful outcomes during the 2011 and 2014 National Electrical Code cycles, ISA recently submitted new proposals for the 2017 NEC.
The principal goals of ISA’s current efforts are threefold. First, ISA is responding to the ongoing evolution in electric-sign technologies and the corresponding need for relevant NEC requirements. Secondly, ISA is building upon its consistent efforts to enhance and promote electric-sign safety by sponsoring appropriate modifications in the NEC. Thirdly, ISA is expanding on its previous efforts to improve the precision of NEC Article 600 and, thereby, to facilitate correct interpretation and enforcement of the NEC by local jurisdictions throughout the U.S.
Because technology and related safety needs are constantly changing, the ISA technical committees analyze relevant codes and standards on a continuous basis. The significant influence of ISA in overall development of electrical codes and standards supports a stable and predictable regulatory environment within which sign companies can perform their daily work safely and profitably. Through its outreach efforts and ongoing relationship with the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI), ISA further supports members by offering direct assistance on local, jurisdictional issues which involve interpretation and enforcement of the NEC.
Through the determined efforts of its Electrical Codes & Standards Subcommittee, ISA continues to serve as a positive and proactive force supporting electric-sign safety and enhancing usability of the NEC. The NEC will be deciding on ISA proposals in January 2015. For more information, please contact ISA’s Bill Dundas.
