Feds Want to Allow Older Signs to Stay
The U.S. Department of Transportation is now proposing that communities replace traffic signs when they are worn out rather than requiring that signs be replaced by a specific deadline, overturning regulations establishing deadlines under the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Originally, the deadline had required that certain street-name signs be replaced by 2018 to meet minimum retroreflectivity standards and required larger lettering on those street-name signs. These are among the series of deadlines eliminated under the proposed amendment. Although the MUTCD standards apply only to traffic signs, the rationale of promoting driver safety through optimum size and lighting standards applies equally to commercial on-premise signs.
