Don’t Keep Signs in the Dark
The International Dark Skies Association (IDA) wants to restrict outdoor night-time illumination, and this includes sign lighting. That’s why ISA has been working to educate IDA and government officials on the importance of visible and effectively illuminated signs at night.
In order to change the hearts and minds of government officials and other key stakeholders, ISA’s James Carpentier and other sign industry representatives recently participated in an event sponsored by IDA, the “Dark Skies and Emerging Technology Conference – Blinded by the Light: A Summit and Call to Action to Protect Our Night Skies” in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The lighting restrictions proposed by IDA and their adherents will adversely affect the ability of businesses to be seen when it’s dark outside, and may also have public safety implications. In response to these sign lighting restrictions, ISA has developed reasonable solutions to the problem of glaring illuminated signs. This includes EMC Night-time Brightness Recommendations and research by Villanova University on how businesses value their illuminated signs.
ISA will continue to work to provide the sign industry’s expertise and to protect the ability of our products to be visible and readable at night.
