Coalition of Business Owners Make Waves at Meeting on City Ordinances in Cumberland, R.I.
Sign industry advocates turned out en masse to push for larger size allowances and greater clarity in the draft sign ordinance proposed in Cumberland, R.I. In support of the sign industry’s position, a large coalition of 15+ local business owners, Northeast States Sign Association members and ISA staff turned out to voice criticism of existing policies concerning A-frame and banner signage, tactics used by Town enforcement officials, restrictions on contractor signs, freestanding sign height limits, and electronic message centers.
The Board agreed to delay the ordinance until new language can be written. The Board also agreed to stop the increased enforcement of A-Frame signs until the implementation of the revised code. ISA’s Kenny Peskin (@signcodeguy), along with a leader of the ad-hoc business owners’ group, will be working with Town staff in drafting improved language.
Working with NSSA members Ronnie Dion and NSSA Board member Ray Dion (Dion Signs; Central Falls, R.I.), Peskin delivered remarks during the Town Board public hearing, and submitted a detailed written analysis of the draft ordinance language.
