Strategic Insights Paper Explores Impact of 5G

The coming of 5G, expected to be fully implemented next year, will mean sweeping changes for the sign, graphics and visual communications industry, according to the latest ISA Strategic Insight paper. “Strategic Insights: 5G In Signage Technology,” written by Dexter Johnson, contributing editor, Institute for Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) Spectrum, explains how 5G will allow advances in virtual reality, autonomous vehicles and the Internet of Things.

5G, or the fifth generation of mobile, will allow a new level of interconnectivity with reduced latency (lag time). This “could certainly mean that as people walk through a train station the signs that are displayed along the wall could instantaneously change to reveal an advertisement that is likely to appeal to the person who is closest to at that time, and then change immediately as the next person passes by it,” Johnson writes. “Industries that will survive are already preparing for this scenario. It’s expected brands will be able to communicate their messages directly to consumers in real time.”

This Strategic Insight paper is the third in a series designed to help sign, graphics and visual communications companies anticipate future technology and its impact on their businesses. Other papers published have explored topics like nanomaterials and extended reality.

“5G” is available at signs.org/insights. Cost is $24.95 for ISA members and $99.95 for non-members.
