Planners and Code Officials Educated about Sign Industry
Educating planners and local officials about the importance of effective signage is crucial to the development of reasonable sign codes. That’s why planners from Oregon and Washington state participated in a Planning for Sign Code Success seminar on June 27 in Portland, Ore. The day-long educational event was co-presented by ISA, the Northwest Sign Council and the Signage Foundation Inc.
At Friday’s event, planners and even city attorneys learned about sign construction technologies, how to effectively treat EMCs, the legal issues involved in sign regulation, the economic impact of signs and the process in developing sign codes. The speakers at the Portland seminar included Joe Gibson with Ramsey Signs, Mike Freeborg with YESCO (EMC issues), Jeff Aran with the California Sign Association (legal issues), planner Jim Hendryx with the City of Woodburn, Ore. to give a local sign code perspective, and ISA’s James Carpentier, AICP.
This was the second planner education event that has occurred in the NWSC.
ISA, its Affiliated Associations and the Signage Foundation Inc. will continue to educate hundreds of planners on the value of on-premise signs. Later this year, ISA and its Affiliated Associations plan on unveiling new online educational resources geared to planners, as well as presenting additional planner education seminars in Louisiana, Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, California, and Connecticut.
