Planners and Code Officials Educated About Sign Industry
Educating planners and local officials about the importance of effective signage is crucial to the development of reasonable sign codes. That’s why Ohio planners participated in a “Planning for Sign Code Success” seminar on September 5, 2014 at the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission offices in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The day-long educational event was co-sponsored by ISA, the American Planning Association – Ohio Chapter, the Midwest Sign Association (MSA) and the Signage Foundation Inc (SFI).
Nearly 45 planners and sign code officials learned about sign construction technologies, best practices in regulating temporary signs, legal issues in sign regulation, EMC controls, the economic impact of signs and the process in developing sign codes during the event.
Speakers included Tim McCord (@DaNiteSign, Columbus, OH), SFI Director Wendy Moeller (Compass Point Planning, Blue Ash, OH), John Kunze (@WatchfireSigns, Danville, IL), David Spatholt (Northern Kentucky Area Development District, Florence, KY), and ISA’s Kenny Peskin (@signcodeguy).
In 2014, ISA, its Affiliated Associations and the Signage Foundation Inc. plan to educate hundreds of planners on the value of on-premise signs. Later this year, ISA and its Affiliated Associations plan on unveiling new online educational resources geared to planners, as well as presenting additional planner education seminars in Wisconsin, California, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
