EMC Brightness Not So Bright
Some city officials and planning commissions believe that EMC (Electronic Message Center) brightness is significantly more than that of traditional ground signs. This issue continues to be a concern for the sign industry and affects the type of signs that can be produced by sign and visual communications companies for their customers.
In order to show planning commission and city officials ISAs recommended illumination levels and demonstrate various EMC operational modes, ISA, along with a representative from Daktronics, performed a demonstration of EMC brightness and functions at a recent meeting of the Yakima Planning Commission in Yakima, Wash. Illumination levels of the EMC and a traditionally constructed ground sign were compared. The demonstration revealed that the EMC was about one half as bright as the adjacent traditional ground sign.
Last year, the Yakima Council placed a moratorium on new EMCs until April 30, 2014. A Yakima Planning Commission hearing on proposed EMC regulations is planned for February 12, 2014. For more information on this issue, contact ISA’s James Carpentier.
