ISA’s ongoing work with planners has led to another win for the sign and graphics industry. When the city of Reno, Nevada, began considering allowing electronic message centers (EMCs) for public and private schools, planners there reached out to ISA for advice. ISA had worked on previous issues in the community.
ISA’s James Carpentier participated in stakeholder meetings with the Reno Planning Department, bringing his decades of experience working with communities across the country. While the effort was opposed by anti-sign stakeholder groups, the planning department recommended allowing EMCs for the city’s public and private schools. This would create opportunities for sign companies in the region and allow the schools to share important messages easily.
As the issue made its way through the legislative process, it appeared the community might adopt stricter regulations. Carpentier’s ongoing involvement, and the contributions of area sign companies, helped answer questions raised. ISA also submitted testimony advocating for the allowance of EMCs, Ultimately, the Reno City Council last week voted in favor of the changes proposed by the planning department and supported by ISA.
While EMCs are currently limited in use in some places across the country, ISA will continue to work with communities like Reno to expand EMCs.
Because EMCs are one of the most heavily regulated types of signs, ISA has created a web page with a number of resources for sign companies, planners and other stakeholders.
