Cities Continue to Look to ISA for Sign Code Expertise
When looking for expertise and guidance in developing new sign codes, public officials increasingly look to ISA for answers. Last Thursday, the planning staff in Frenchtown Township, Mich. invited the International Sign Association to educate the planning commission about updating its sign ordinance. This invitation came after a coordinated effort among ISA, the Midwest Sign Association (MSA) and township officials.
In mid-January, township staff approached MSA for assistance in educating the planning commission members about an overview of signage and upcoming advances in sign technology. Within a few days, ISA’s Manager of State and Local Government Affairs Kenny Peskin (@signcodeguy) had committed to provide a 60-minute workshop for township officials at no cost to Frenchtown government. On February 20, Peskin presented and answered questions for 90 minutes during a successful work session with members of the planning board and additional local officials. He presented on the history of the ordinance, issues of enforcement, legal concerns, and shortcomings in the language of the current regulations. The session also looked forward to challenges and concerns in future sign regulation.
ISA expects Frenchtown Township to continue discussions on proposed EMC and other sign regulations in the coming months, with proposals likely to emerge by late Spring 2014. And, ISA and MSA will continue to provide insights and education.
