Benefit Your Business by Working with Your Local Officials
What does it really take to cultivate working relationships with local officials to affect better sign code and regulations in your community? A common frustration of sign companies is an inability to influence positively the thinking of local permitting and enforcement officials. It took more than four years of work, multiple programs and educational trainings by International Sign Association (ISA), Northeast States Sign Association (NSSA) and the Signage Foundation, Inc (SFI), to create a positive working relationship with local officials. The Town of Framingham ultimately joined the NSSA to get better access to the resources and expertise of the staff and research developed by ISA and SFI.
Last week, a very successful municipal workshop was held in Framingham, Mass. The Building Commissioner of Framingham, Mass. asked ISA, NSSA and SFI experts to present a two-hour workshop analyzing the problems and frustrations of the existing town sign ordinance. The workshop included nearly 35 city officials, community members, businessmen, as well as municipal officials from several neighboring communities. ISA, NSSA and SFI presented on the history of the ordinance, issues of enforcement, legal concerns, and shortcomings in the language of the current regulations.
Because of this workshop, key decision makers have the right education and information to make better decisions about sign codes in their communities. Going forward, NSSA and ISA will continue to work with the Town of Framingham as well as other Massachusetts communities that learn about the well-received assistance that aided the Building Commissioner’s efforts.
