ISA to Present at American Planning Association’s National Planning Conference

Alexandria, VA – March 13, 2017Third time in four years ISA has educated at this national event

The International Sign Association again will help city planners learn more about developing reasonable and effective sign codes at the American Planning Association’s National Planning Conference.

ISA’s James Carpentier, AICP, will moderate the panel presentation “What Do We Do Post-Reed” on opening night at the annual event May 6 in New York City.

Session attendees will learn more about navigating the legal challenges of regulating signs after the landmark U.S. Supreme Court Case, Reed v. Town of Gilbert. The session will include case studies of how communities have regulated signs since Reed, and provides best practices for planners as they try to comply with the court’s decision.

Presenters include nationally recognized experts:

  • Alan Weinstein, Cleveland State University (author of The State of Sign Codes after Reed)
  • Roger Eastman, AICP, Lisa Wise Consulting
  • Wendy Moeller, AICP, Compass Point Planning
  • Mark White, AICP, White & Smith, LLC

This marks the third time since 2014 that ISA has presented at the American Planning Association’s National Planning Conference. ISA’s 2016 presentation ranked as fourth best out of 150 sessions, according to APA.

“More and more, planners are looking to ISA to help them understand Reed and how it applies to local sign codes,” said David Hickey, ISA’s vice president of advocacy. “It helps when the sign, graphics and visual communications industry provides quality information to local officials to ensure that their sign codes are constitutional.”

ISA has worked with the National APA and local APA chapters to help educate thousands of planners after Reed. And more often than not, notes Hickey, “a discussion about Reed leads to us working together on other sign code issues, like EMCs and permitting requirements.”

In addition to presenting the Reed seminar, ISA will be exhibiting at the conference, where industry experts will answer sign code questions from thousands of attendees and hand out ISA’s refreshed “Night-time Brightness Level Recommendations for On-Premise Electronic Message Centers,” which has been adopted in whole or in part by more than 250 communities. ISA also has a robust lineup of products that assist local officials and planners at www.signs.org/local.
