ISA’s First Mobile Crane Operator Safety Training Has 90 Percent Certification Success Rate

Alexandria, VA – February 3, 2011

The first mobile crane operator safety training program conducted by the International Sign Association led to a 90 percent success rate in certification testing. Participants spent three days in classroom training, held at North Shore Signs in Libertyville, Ill., January 19–22, and participated in written and practical certification testing the next day. The testing was conducted by The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO).

ISA’s training program was created in response to new OSHA mandates that all mobile crane operators be trained and successfully complete certification testing by 2014. The International Sign Association will offer more than 40 training courses in 2011; all will be immediately followed by NCCCO testing.

“We are extremely proud that 90 percent of those who completed the training course went on to immediately pass the certification testing,” said Tracey Cook, ISA Director of Education and Communication. “This attests to the value of the training program, which has recently been updated to ensure that it meets the new federal mandates, and provides a quality preparation for the testing.”

The OSHA rules require employers to pay for their employees’ certification testing. While the rules are designed to ensure a safe jobsite, the certification also may bring reduced Workers’ Compensation premiums. Companies should check with their insurance providers to see if they qualify.

“The OSHA schedule is aggressive, with a four-year time frame, and could be difficult for many businesses to meet,” said Lori Anderson, ISA President and CEO. “That’s why ISA has taken such an advocacy role for our industry, to ensure that quality training can help these operators pass the certification testing on the first attempt.”

Throughout 2011, ISA will offer training programs throughout the country. Sessions also will be held at ISA International Sign Expo, April 27-30 in Las Vegas.

Training fees are $349 for ISA members and $549 for non-members. In addition, certification fees are $165 for the written exam and $60 for the practical exam. Registration for the courses is open at www.signs.org/cranetraining.
